Jab Technique

The Jab

Punch Fundamental Offense

The jab is the most important punch in boxing. It's a straight punch thrown with the lead hand that serves multiple purposes: measuring distance, setting up combinations, keeping opponents at bay, and disrupting their rhythm.

A proper jab involves extending your lead hand straight out while rotating your fist to land with the knuckles up. Keep your rear hand up for protection and return quickly to your guard position after throwing.

Slip Technique

Slipping Punches

Defense Head Movement Counter

Slipping is a defensive technique where you move your head just enough to avoid an incoming punch while maintaining balance and positioning for a counterattack.

To slip a jab, rotate your upper body slightly to the outside while keeping your eyes on your opponent. For straight rights, slip to the inside. The key is minimal movement - just enough to make the punch miss.

Cross Technique

The Cross

Power Punch Straight Rear Hand

The cross is a powerful straight punch thrown with the rear hand. It's one of the main power punches in boxing and is often used following a jab in the classic "1-2" combination.

To throw a proper cross, pivot your rear foot and rotate your hips and shoulders as you extend your rear hand straight toward the target. Transfer your weight from your back foot to your front foot for maximum power.

Angle Cutting

Footwork Positioning Strategy

Angle cutting is a footwork technique used to create advantageous positions against your opponent. By moving at angles rather than straight forward or backward, you can avoid attacks while setting up your own.

The key to effective angle cutting is to use small, precise steps rather than large ones. Pivot on your lead foot to change direction quickly, and always maintain your balance and defensive posture.

The 1-2-3 Combination

Combination Punches Attack

The 1-2-3 combination (jab-cross-lead hook) is one of the most effective and commonly used combinations in boxing. It allows you to attack at different angles and break through your opponent's defense.

After throwing the jab and cross, pivot on your lead foot and rotate your hips to generate power for the hook. Keep your rear hand up to protect against counters. The hook should be thrown with a bent arm at 90 degrees, targeting the side of your opponent's head or body.

Defense Blocking Protection

The high guard is a fundamental defensive position where you use your gloves to protect your head and face from incoming punches. It's especially effective against hook punches and flurries.

To assume the high guard, raise both gloves to protect the sides of your head, with your elbows tucked in to protect your body. Keep your eyes forward to see incoming punches and opportunities to counter.
